It is great to report that the latest album from Rosanne Cash The List will be coming out on vinyl.
She has been criminally neglected on black gold, having made some of the finest music to come out of the U.S. for the last 20 years, as is proved by Kings Record Shop and Interiors. This 2009 album is a tribute to her dad, featuring many of Johnny Cashs favourite songs. As she states in a recent interview, These songs are in my DNA.
She brings her own feel and emotion to these classic songs, duetting with Springsteen on Don Gibsons mercurial Sea of Heartbreak, and Heartaches by the Number features the ubiquitous Elvis Costello. The hard times she has endured in the last few years, with the deaths of her father, stepmother and birth mother followed by recent successful brain surgery as well as the removal of some polyps on her vocal chords have given Rosanne every right to pour all these conflicting emotions into these songs.
Others helping out include Neko Case, Jeff Tweedy and Rufus Wainwright. Other great performances include Motherless Children, Long Black Veil and Miss the Mississippi and You. Her husband John Leventhal produced The List, and adds sublime guitar work. The album title comes from a list of 100 classic American songs that her father gave her back in the Seventies, when he was worried about Rosannes rocknroll sensibilities. He need not have been concerned!
