Woodstock, New York-based producer Photay — best known for his work on Mexican Summer — drops epic acid, breakbeat and Afrobeat-infused magic on Always Cosmic, released on the ever-reliable Multi Culti imprint, long a superior outlet for dark disco and deliciously psychedelic dance music. The A-side features Photay’s superb vocal and instrumental reworks of British crew United Freedom Collective’s ‘Always Open’, featuring the vocal talents of Falle Nioke. Joining the dots between dreamy breaks, Afrobeat and saucer-eyed acid house, both versions honour the original while taking the track deeper into trippy, early morning territory — brilliant across the board and already picking up early plays from Gilles Peterson and Lauren Laverne on BBC 6Music for very good reason. On the B-side, Photay crafts his own spaced-out cuts using elements from the United Freedom Collective session. ‘Always Cosmic’ is even more spacey, squelchy and acid-fired than its A-side counterpart — deep, emotional and impossible not to move to. ‘pH Dub’ closes the record by dubbing out his own deep, picturesque and piano-splattered remix of Conclave & Toribio into cosmic, expansive territory — deep emotional stuff that never loses the fun factor with sheer, un-fakeable excitement in the rhythm section.
