Description
When John Coltrane walked into Atlantic’s studio in 1960 with a soprano sax he had only recently begun exploring, few could have predicted how decisively it would redirect his path. The instrument’s bright, cutting timbre opened new harmonic corridors, and this session captures the moment that discovery crystallised. The title track stretches out in long, circling phrases, Coltrane unspooling variations with a focus that feels both meditative and restless. ‘But Not For Me’ moves with sharper bite, pushed forward by McCoy Tyner’s chordal drive. On the flip, ‘Summertime’ shifts the air again, darker and more declarative, before ‘Everytime We Say Goodbye’ brings the sequence back to something small and private. This mono reissue restores the immediacy of the room: four musicians listening hard, sensing a new language taking shape.
