Where her debut Psychopomp processed loss in raw, immediate terms, this album takes a longer view, finding distance and even beauty in the same emotional territory.
Soft Sounds, Machinist, Road Head and Till Death are among the standout tracks on an album that is both intimate and expansive. Zauner’s songwriting is precise and affecting, and the production — layered, dreamy and occasionally disorienting — perfectly matches the album’s themes. A quietly essential record.
