Description
Kevin Shinyribs Russell is known as the front man of Austin musical combo The Gourds. Russell, in search of an outlet for his massive stockpile of songs, began performing as Shinyribs as early as 2006. After playing a monthly show in Houston for 2 years, he honed Shinyribs into one of the most interesting roots music experiences around.
A revolving cast of Austin talent has evolved into the top notch band of fellow Gourd Keith Langford on drums, Cerebral Pony man, Jeff Brown, on bass, and Kentucky Fried keyboard whiz, Winfield Cheek. With The Gourds on hiatus, Kevin can put all his efforts into Shinyribs.
Johnny Paycheck, Stevie Wonder, and Woody Guthriethose three influences triangulate Shinyribs well. Russell emulsifies these sounds into a soulful roots-music sound of his own that he uses to back his impressionistic lyrics about love, life, death, and food. Houston Chronicle cover story
