Description

‘Wind & Wuthering’ is a first in some ways and a last in others. It is the first album that Genesis recorded in December 1976 not in their native England, but in Holland. It is the band’s last progressive rock album and also the last with guitarist Steve Hackett, who departs after increasing tensions, especially with keyboardist Tony Banks, after the tour for the album. It is the first album with a poppy love song (Your Own Special Way) and the band should continue to follow exactly this direction after ‘Wind & Wuthering’ (not to the delight of all fans).
And some things are again not different at all: The album cover is designed like the predecessors by Hipgnosis, a British duo consisting of Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell, who until the mid-1980s provided pretty much every well-known rock band with ingenious cover art.
Also no different is the complex way in which the musicians link lyrics and sound. One would love to know which of the four was the reader. On the other hand, ‘Wuthering Heights’ by Emily Brontë, to which the album seems dedicated, is something like Goethe’s ‘Faust’ for the Germans on the island – a social epic.
Tony Banks leaves the biggest impression on the record. His keyboard, his beautiful organ playing as well as his arrangements are present in every song, one could almost say ‘Wind & Wuthering’ is his album. He wrote three songs on his own, and participated in three others.
