Description
Enslaved release their iconic early demo from 1992 ‘Yggdrasill’ as a fully remastered re-issue through By Norse Music!
Theres a lot to be said for a band that evolves and grows over time, one that brings in new elements, thus transcending the limitations of its origins. But theres also quite a lot to say about drawing the knives and going right for the throat. And though Enslaved has become renowned in metal circles for records like Isa, Ruun and RIITIIR, theres no denying the power of the bands early output. Frost and Vikingligr Veldi are both crucial contributions to the canon of second wave black metal, but theres something uniquely fascinating about any bands primordial work, and 1992s Yggdrasill is no exception. Metal Injection
Raw, untamed, furious yet sophisticated, ‘Yggdrasill’ is undoubtedly an essential cornerstone of the Norwegian Black Metal scene. Despite the young age of their members in their teens at the time they recorded it, Yggdrasill already shows Enslaved’s ability to write complex, powerful and evocative compositions, being among the first ones to tap into the Norse mythology and Viking imagery to convey their Nordic heritage.
Ivar Bjørnson comments:
For a band seemingly obsessed with the concepts of roots and what springs from them; that would be us, yes – Yggdrasill is the exploding seed, the rampant alpha and the All from which everything we do and do not today springs. It is a release of which I am immensely proud of and have endless tenderness for. Youthful pure passion for music, disregard for any perceived rules and dogmas – I try to let this inspire everything we do to this day, however different we may or may not sound today. Getting to finally release this in proper fashion through By Norse Music, the label I own and run with my best friends – now that is truly a massive milestone for me.
Fully remastered by Tony Lindgren at Fascination Street Studios, this new re-issue of ‘Yggdrasill’ from By Norse Music (Ivar Bjørnsons own imprint) will be available as a CD digipack w/ 12-pages booklet. It features all five songs from the demo plus the Bonus Track Enslaved on all formats! The layout of the CD features an informative inlay with liner notes from both Grutle Kjellson and Ivar Bjørnson, providing a historical perspective upon the music, archive photos from the period and full lyrics!
