Knitting Factory Records reissue Fela Kutis Coffin For Head Of State on vinyl, previously only available as part of the Box Set series.
The album is among Felas most courageous responses to the Nigerian armys destruction of Kalakuta on 18 February 1977. During the attack, Felas mother, aged 78, a veteran of Nigerias struggle for independence from British colonial rule and an early campaigner for Nigerian womens rights, was thrown out of an upstairs window, fracturing a leg. Fela believed that the assault led to his mothers death 14 months later.
The reissues arrive at an exciting time for the Fela Kuti legacy, with a new website launching. This has been almost a year in the making and holds a huge amount of potential. Alongside new merchandise, editorial and brand collaborations (such as with Carhartt from earlier this year), will function as the primary resource for Felas life and affiliate projects online.
