Shakti’s debut album explodes from Barcelona with the weight of India’s past and the urgency of punk’s present. Drawing on memories of Bollywood soundtracks blaring from corner shops, cinematic villains, and the politics of class, it’s a record that turns nostalgia into confrontation. Echoes of Hindustani classical music, 1980s Indian disco, and raw garage collide with post-punk sprawl and tongue-in-cheek hardcore in the vein of Electric Deads or Tozibabe.

Harsh Marathi vocals—ranging from whispers to manic laughter—cut through melodic basslines, earworm guitars, and pounding snares straight out of a Crass record. Between bursts of fury are moments of biting humour: lyrics mocking empty slogans, riffs on colonial plunder, and cinematic transitions laced with inside jokes only a billion people might catch.

At its core, Shakti wrestles with exile, identity, and revolution. It’s sarcastic and danceable, yet deadly serious. When the closing anthem ‘Purvichi Adchan’ chants its mantra of “Shakti!”, it lands like a defiant rallying cry—an electrified reminder that even within emptiness, there’s power to be found.
