Description
When Jim Morrison, John Densmore, Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek took to the stage of the Hollywood Bowl on July 5, 1968, they set off their very own fireworks display just one day after the official American Independence Day celebrations. For over an hour, they presented a memorable repertoire that included then-classics such as When The Music’s Over, Back Door Man and Light My Fire as well as brand new songs such as Hello, I Love You, which entered the US charts at number 1 just a few weeks after the concert.
The legendary performance was filmed and is still regarded today not only as one of the best performances ever delivered by The Doors – it is also the only Doors concert ever to have been filmed in its entirety. Despite this, fans had to accept significant compromises when the home video was later released, as Hello, I Love You, The W.A.S.P. (Texas Radio And The Big Beat) and Spanish Caravan were not included in the film for technical reasons. Moreover, the audio CD released in 1987 only contained 7 of 16 songs, so that the audience had to make do with a good half of the actual concert, especially as the order of the songs did not correspond to the performance either. Although Spanish Caravan was included on the album, cult performances such as When The Music’s Over, W.A.S.P., Hello, I love You were still inaccessible. The Doors superhit Light My Fire only appeared in a special edit that only represented an excerpt of the performance.
This untenable situation for any fan has now changed abruptly: With the complete re-editing of the film and audio tracks, high-end technology ensures that the entire concert is available in its entirety for the first time. Both the concert film and the audio recording have been meticulously reworked as authentically as possible using state-of-the-art equipment. Jeff Jampool used the original negative rolls of the cameras for the reworking of the film recordings, which enabled him to increase the visual quality enormously while preserving the original recordings.
