Sum 41 present their new album, 13 Voices, via Hopeless Records, marking the bands first album in five years, following 2011s Screaming Bloody Murder, which featured the Grammy nominated song Blood In My Eyes.
On the new album, frontman Deryck Whibley says, I am really excited to be releasing an album after everything Ive been through recently. This new music represents the journey Ive been on throughout the process of making this record. I had to fall in order to rise, and nothing feels better than to have something you love that you had to really fight for. I can honestly say that 13 Voices saved my life and I cannot wait to share it with all of you.
Whibley began writing for 13 Voices immediately following a four-month stint in the hospital. The frontman recalls, I had to learn how to do everything again-my motor skills, learning how to play guitar again I couldnt even walk at the time. It was really difficult, but at the same time if I didnt have a record to make, I dont think I would have recovered as quickly. Writing music gave me a purpose. I had to get better. As Whibleys health improved so did his ability to write songs. 13 Voices soon began to take shape and was recorded, produced and engineered by Whibley at his home in Los Angeles.
The record includes a surprise return from original guitarist Dave Brownsound, who parted ways with the band a decade prior. The first song Dave played guitar on was Goddamn Im Dead Again, a track that proves that the fiery guitar riffs that came to define Sum 41 are back. In addition to bassist Cone McCaslin and lead guitarist Tom Thacker, Sum 41 would also formally welcome Frank Zummo (Street Drum Corps, Krewella, Thenewno2, Dead By Sunrise) behind the kit. The end result stands tall as Sum 41s most intense, cathartic and all-around finest work in years.
